Catalan Institute of America, Inc. is a non-profit organization with more than 500 members, headquartered in the city of New York. Its mission is to celebrate and promote the Catalan language and culture in the United States.

One of the main objectives of the Catalan Institute of America is to serve as the meeting point for everyone who has an interest in the Catalan language and culture. In addition, its members are motivated by a desire to share their unique heritage with their friends and partners in the U.S.

Since its inception, the Catalan Institute of America has been instrumental in:

  1. Promoting the Catalan culture in North America.
  2. Facilitating members’ contacts and their collaboration in matters of legal and fiscal services, lodging and housing, and U.S. residence.
  3. Encouraging membership and strengthening partnerships.
  4. Pursuing resources and services in Catalan for its members & their families and friends.

In fact, the organization celebrates important Catalan traditions such as Sant Jordi (April 23) - Catalonia’s tradition designated by UNESCO as the World Book and Copyright Day-, Sant Joan (June 24), La Diada -the National Day of Catalonia- (September 11), and La Castanyada / Tot Sants (The Day of the Dead) (November 1). Furthermore, it organizes informal gatherings to support and cherish the famous Catalan soccer team, Futbol Club Barcelona. The latest cultural undertaking is the exploration of theater in Catalan; a first play performance will take place in the near future. Finally, the Catalan Institute of America is devoted to support Catalan -related cultural events in New York. These include lectures, book presentations, exhibitions, and concerts.

The Institute also works with local organizations and contributes to making a difference in various neighborhoods and communities. For example, a book drive was recently organized for the NY homeless living with HIV or AIDS. Moreover, the Institute hosted fund raising events for the United Nations tsunami victims relief fund and for the Red Cross Katrina victims relief effort.

The organization is rapidly growing and expanding thanks to the many contributions made by its members and their affiliates. Membership is currently free and allows members to access an electronic mailing list forum where they can post information, ask questions, provide support, give suggestions, and disseminate news. This electronic forum encourages members to become active participants and share their thoughts and feelings. As a result, this electronic forum has provided and continues to provide members with a sense of belonging to a very special and exciting community.

Finally, recent developments have empowered the Catalan Institute of American. The Institute - incorporated by the New York State Department of Education last year - is now working to be recognized as a tax-exempt corporation. In addition, a formal petition was recently issued to the Government of Catalonia so that the Institute adopts the status of ‘Catalan Casal’. These developments and prospective accomplishments will bring exciting opportunities for growth, collaboration, integration, and dissemination.

New members and volunteers are cordially welcome. Thank you for your support. Do not hesitate to contact the Board of Directors with your suggestions at
